Wexford ranks 18th in National Lottery list of ‘lucky counties’

-

WEXFORD is in the bottom half of the league table of lucky lotto counties, according to data from the National Lottery.

In the 30 years since the launch of the National Lottery in 1988, County Wexford has had 46 jackpot winners, or 3.07 for every 10,000 people living in the county.

In contrast, the ‘Wee County’ of Louth, which tops the lucky list, has had 76 wins, or 5.9 for every 10,000 people, while Donegal has secured 90 wins, 5.65 for every 10,000 residents.

Wexford is 18th in the lucky counties ranking, lagging behind neighbours Wicklow, Carlow and Waterford, but ahead of Kilkenny.

Wexford’s lotto fortunes picked up last month when a €2 million jackpot was won with a ticket purchased at the Mace store in Kilmore Quay.

The figures have been released ahead of Wednesday’s rollover jackpot of an estimated €7.5 million and National Lottery CEO Dermot Griffin is keen to stress that past results have no bearing on future wins.

‘It is important to note that chance has no memory and playing Lotto is purely a matter of luck. Whether it is in Wexford, Laois, or Louth, in a shop or online from the comfort of your own home, you have the exact same chance of winning a prize.’

• Meanwhile, BoyleSports have revealed that a lucky Wexford punter won big with a small stake on the lotto last week. The customer collected €15,000 from a BoyleSports shop in Wexford after placing a €2 stake on four numbers in Wednesday’s National Lottery, with odds of 7500/1.

‘We send huge congratulations to our Wexford customer who caught us out in spectacular fashion with just a €2 bet that has ended up costing us €15,000,’ said Lawrence Lyons, from BoyleSports. ‘We have to admire them for their big thinking and good luck to them splashing out with their winnings.’
