Rising Stars give fine show
THE RISING Stars Rackard League final took place in Innovate Wexford Park, with Piercestown and Bunscoil Rís from New Ross played out an exciting final for the shield.
Bunscoil Rís, with a vocal band of supporters, played with a strong breeze in the first-half and were the dominant side.
Scores from Dylan Lennon and the diminutive Killian Murphy came freely, whereas Piercestown-Murrintown missed some gilt-edged chances at the other end.
With 3-6 on the scoreboard for Bunscoil Rís, things looked ominous for the Piercestown-Murrintown boys, but a spectacular goal by Cormac Simpson just before half-time was a fillip for the team.
The score at the interval was Bunscoil Rís 3-6, Piercestown 2-2.
After the break, the wind-assisted Piercestown boys were transformed and three quick goals saw them take the lead in a surprising turn of events.
Those goals from Rory Roche, Leo Barry and Caleb Whitty ensured that Piercestown were back on track. Bunscoil Rís never gave up and a great goal gave them renewed hope.
The Piercestown boys were rampant and points from Timmy Somers and Rory Roche ensured that the title was coming their way.
Bunscoil Rís are to be commended for a great display in their first final in Innovate Wexford Park, and their teachers and supporters were buoyant after this performance.
Hopefully this positive experience will stand to the young players in the years to come, and keep their interest in hurling to the forefront.
