Ballyroebuck turn tables
THESE SIDES were no strangers to each other, having met in the Rackard League Roinn ‘A’ camogie final when Piercestown prevailed.
Their mini-sevens final was played on a fine evening in Innovate Wexford Park recently.
Piercestown’s backs had a tough job keeping Ballyroebuck out, but Ellen Coleman was superb in goal and was aided by her sturdy full-back line of Ellie O’Mahony and Grace O’Connor.
The opening score came from Ballyroebuck’s Orla O’Rourke who wasted no time in striking the ball over the bar.
Her side continued to plough forward as Tilda Murphy showed utter class to fend off Grace O’Connor and rattle the net.
Up the other end, Piercestown’s Sinéad Cullen made an effort to handpass the ball into the net but she was denied by Éabha Guinan.
Ballyroebuck entered the second-half with a two-goal lead and were soon three up when Tilda Murphy scored her third.
Her goal was followed by another from Orla O’Rourke. This of course put immense pressure on Piercestown, but the girls showed great skill as they continued to battle on and a goal from Cullen helped their efforts.
Tilda Murphy then struck the net for her fourth and, as the saying goes, goals win matches and this was definitely the case here.
Despite their uphill battle, Mia Quirke, Kate Stafford and the Piercestown girls rallied on. The game ended Ballyroebuck 7-1 to Piercestown’s 1-1.
The cup was presented to Ballyroebuck’s Rebecca Kavanagh by the Rackard League Chairman, Kevin Waters.
