WONDERFUL WATER COLOURS

-

Members of the Tomhaggard Watercolour Group attached to the Women’s Shed held an impressive exhibition of their work in the local community centre to coincide with the annual Novena church festival.

The group was established two years ago following a demonstration in the Women’s Shed by the Murrintown-based artist Maria Murphy, who teaches classes to the members.

None of them had ever painted before but they came on artistically in leaps and bounds under Maria’s tutelage.

‘We were all brand new to it. Most of us had never painted before,’ said Women’s Shed chairperson Angela Byrne.

‘In the Women’s Shed we are trying to introduce activities to take people out of their comfort zone. Maria is a brilliant teacher. She brings people along and really brings out the best in everyone’.

The proof is in the standard of watercolour pictures painted by Breda Hayes, Angela Byrne, Carol Gray, Mairead Devereux, Jenny Walsh, Mary Doyle and John Toft, featuring scenes of well-known local landmarks and landscapes from around Ireland and abroad.

The exhibition was launched at a reception attended by Cllr. Jim Moore, chairperson of Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board ( WWETB) supporter of the Women’s Shed which was founded three years ago and has 35 members, He was joined by Cllrs Ger Carthy and Mick Roche in the unveiling a permanent mosaic by Women’s Shed members in the community centre.
