Ger Devereux Memorial Run
The annual Ger Devereux Memorial Run/Walk will take place on September 9, meeting at Bellefield GAA Complex. Registration will take place from 10 a.m. with the walk getting started at 11 a.m. Funds raised last year were used to fund four defibrillators and train more than 30 people in AED in the Enniscorthy area and it is hoped that this year this work can be continued with the help of Enniscorthy Red Cross. Comedy gig
Two of Ireland’s best loved comedians combine for a special double-headlining show, ‘The Shape of Two’, at the Presentation Centre on September 28. Fred Cooke and Bernard Casey have both carved out sterling reputations for hilarity on the Irish comedy scene and will combine for this special Enniscorthy show. Having smashed his debut performance at the Electric Picnic, Bernard took the internet by storm with his viral videos on the Polish/ Irish accent, the French oral and the Irish listening test. Meanwhile, Fred Cooke is a familiar face from stints on the Tommy Tiernan Show and Republic of Telly and brings his own high-energy storytelling style. Lourdes book
A book celebrating 50 years of the Ferns pilgrimage to Lourdes is available to buy now from the St Aidan’s parish office. The book is filled with interesting articles, old photographs and memories from over the years. They are priced at €10 and people are encouraged to get them now while stocks last.
Concert
A special variety concert is to take place at the Presentation Centre on Friday, September 21, in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Wexford Branch. Among the artists performing on the night are Myles Doyle, Aideen Ní Ríada, Shannon O’Leary, Jamie and Kerry, Niamh Crowhurst, Shauna Hever, Alice Medcalf and Franco Doyle. Admission on the night will be €10 and there will also be a raffle with some great prizes. The fun gets under way at 8.30 p.m. and a great night of entertainment is guaranteed.
Thankyou
The family of the late Andrsej Laszczyk of Bellefield Road wish to thank everyone who helped fundraise to bring Andrsej back to Poland. The total raised was €4,080 and his partner Gosia, son Bartek and all the family are extremely grateful.
Build a game
Enniscorthy Library is to host a special workshop that will give seven- to 10-year-olds the opportunity to build their own arcade game on Saturday, August 18, from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop introduces primary school kids to the world of electronics using the medium of games consoles.
Participants will be given a kit consisting of a touch screen display, a small computer board and various other electronic components along with a detailed set of instructions.
With the help of a number of assistants, they will build a hand-held electronic gaming system.
Having tested and played with the system participants will then personalise their game console by modifying some of the game characters. Booking for this workshop is essential. To secure a place, contact the library at 053 9236055.
2019calendar
The St Senan’s parish calendar for 2019, featuring some stunning photos of Enniscorthy, is now on sale from the parish office, the sacristy after Mass, O’Callaghan’s Centra or by calling Liz Wildes at 087 9151815. The calendar was a big hit last year and once again all photos have graciously been provided by Liz.
Foraging talk
Former TD Green Party Mary White will arrive in Enniscorthy Library this Thursday, August 9, to discuss wild food foraging. Mary runs Blackstairs Ecotrails with her husband Robert and daughter Dorothy Ellen. She works with schools and other organisations running wild life and foraging workshops and talks and fun trails for children and adults. Admission is free and all are welcome, if you require additional support to fully participate please contact the librarian at 053 9236055.
Golf classic
The Shannon Chapel Restoration Fund golf classic will take place on Friday, August 10.
The cost of entry is €160 for a team of four (excluding dinner). Alternatively a tee box, green or prizes can be sponsored. Bookings can be made by contacting the pro-shop at 053 9237600 or 053 9233191.
Retirement association
A members’ meeting will take place on the first Tuesday of each month at the Riverside Hotel at 2.30 p.m. The association trip to Jersey will be on September 17.
Ongoing activities are as follows: Monday – Line dancing at 11 a.m. at Astro Active Centre; Indoor bowls at 1 p.m. at Astro Active Centre. Wednes- day – Walk at 11 a.m. from Riverside Hotel; Pitch and Putt at 10.30 a.m. at St Patrick’s Pitch and Putt course on Wednesday and Friday; table quiz at 2.30 p.m. every second Wednesday at Loreto Village. Thursday – Ramblers’ walk at 9.30 a.m. from LIDL car park; Scrabble at 10 a.m. at Astro Active Centre. Among the upcoming events are a sponsored walk and barbecue on July 4, a trip to see ‘Wicked’ on Wednesday, July 25, and Gowran Races on July 28.
Mark McCabe
Legendary DJ Mark McCabe, the man behind dance anthem ‘Maniac 2000’, is to perform a special DJ set at Benedict’s in Templeshannon on Saturday, August 25.
It promises to be a great night with more than just a hint of nostalgia. Tickets are now available from eventbrite. ie priced from €12.50 to €20.
Beginners’ soccer hour
Shamrock Rovers are including parents to introduce their children (boys and girls) to the game of soccer in a fun and non-competitive environment at Peter Quinn Park, Templeshannon. The club is offering a free hour of soccer fun where four- to six-year-olds can practice their skills and develop a love of the game. Kids can come along every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. over the summer months.
Patrons
The cathedral cemetery patron and St Mary’s cemetery patron will take place this Sunday, August 12, at 11.50 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. People are encouraged to tend to family graves in advance and are asked to dispose of their rubbish in the bins provided and keep the graveyards looking nice. People are also asked to respect these resting places and property of others who visit the cemetery.
Volunteers are sought
St Aidan’s Parish are still on the lookout for volunteers to help out at the cathedral.
Particularly sought are church cleaners willing to give one hour of their time each month. Volunteers are particularly needed from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, and Saturday mornings after 10 a.m. Mass. Basket collectors are being sought for the 9.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday Masses each week and Eucharistic Ministers are required for several Masses. Millinery workshop
A special workshop in millinery, or hat-making, with Alice J Kelly will take place at Enniscorthy Library on Thursday, August 16, at 7 p.m. Having worked in millinery for the past six years from Blackwater, Alice produces superb bespoke hats and fascinators for all occasions. Admission to this workshop is free of charge and all are welcome. For further details, contact the library at 053 9236055.
Exhibition
A new exhibition of the work of artist Helen McCleane has taken over the Presentation Centre following the official launch which took place on
Saturday. The exhibition, An Unfolding Portrait, is a vivid combination of suggestive imagery alongside descriptive imagery, creating a dream-like space. It will run till September 9 and people are advised to drop in and see it for themselves. Helen works in paint, glass and mosaic, some of which are on a huge scale.
While a lot of her work will be on display, some will be represented by photography of the work alongside original pieces. For more details, please contact the Presentation Centre.

Gorey and Enniscorthy Family Support Group provides support for those faced with problems with alcohol or drug use by a family member. Meetings weekly. Phone 085 8053978.
Soccer camp at gaelscoil
A soccer camp for kids aged from five to 13 will take place at the Gaelscoil in Drumgoold from today, August 7, till Friday, August 10. The cost is €30 per child and you can book a place or obtain more information by contacting Cllr John O’Rourke at 086 8420609 or Craig Dwyer at 087 1355182.
Initiative by Tidy Towns
Enniscorthy Tidy Towns are encouraging people to ‘pay it forward’ and get involved in keeping the town looking beautiful. The concept states that charity begins at home and encourages people to get together with friends and neighbours to take responsibility and tidy up their own neighbourhoods. You can contact Enniscorthy Tidy Towns for litter pickers, high-vis vests, gloves and bags to get the ball rolling. For more details visit the Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Facebook page.
Also, the annual Tidy Town Competition will be held as usual this year. The categories are Gardens, Shop Fronts, Window Boxes and Hanging Baskets, Public Buildings, Most Improved Premises, Industrial Premises, Tidiest Street and Housing Estate. Having represented Ireland wonderfully at the Eurovision Song Contest, singer-songwriter Ryan O’Shaughnessy will perform a special show at the Presentation Centre on September 15.

Buddy the Musical
Having blown audiences away with a number of rockin’ performances last year, ‘Buddy the Musical’ is set to bring the legendary music of Buddy Holly to life onstage once again in aid of Pieta House at the Presentation Centre from August 13 to August 16 and on August 20, at 8 p.m. nightly. The show tells the story of the tragically short life of Buddy Holly who, along with high-school friends and bandmates the Crickets, turned country music upside down to create some of the greatest rock’n’ roll songs ever written. Once again, the show features some of the finest actors and musicians the South East has to offer and Kildare rock’n’roll sharpshooter Cado in the title role. Once again, it promises to be a hit with Enniscorthy audiences and tickets are now available for €15 from the Presentation Centre.
Ferns youth pilgrimage

Hip-Hop workshop

Grow mental health group
If you’re struggling with mental health difficulties, Grow is a community-based mental health organisation which holds weekly meetings locally. Meetings are confidential and no referral is necessary, simply come along. GROW promotes breaking social isolation. Meetings take place on Mondays at 7.30 p.m. in the Presentation Centre, Convent Road, Enniscorthy.
