THE MR Oil Wexford Intermediate road championships were held in Ballymurn on Friday evening.

Host club, Slaney Olympic, had asked Athletics Wexford to move the race from Enniscorthy because of the festivities dominating the town over the bank holiday weekend.

The women’s race saw Mary Gorham (Slaney Olympic) and Lillian Lawless (S.B.R.) break away from the pack after the first kilometre.

Mary maintained a relentless pace and eventually broke clear to come home an impressive winner from Lillian, with a fast-finishing Angie Redmond third.

The men’s race over an undulating eight km. course was a different affair as no less than six athletes were in contention for individual medals going out on the second lap.

A late surge by Brendan Lyng (United Striders) on the last downhill kilometre took him clear of Mark Poole (Croghan).

George Delaney (U.S.), the county Novice road champion, held on for third.
