Hair today, gone tomorrow for camogie legend!
FOR anyone with an interest in camogie, Wexford and Duffry Rovers legend Deirdre Codd cuts an instantly recognisable figure. However, those who have followed her through multiple All-Ireland winning campaigns might have to double-take now as she sports a daring new look having taken part in a charity head shave in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital Cancer Research.
There was a great crowd in Jordan’s of Ballindaggin as Deirdre braced herself for the snip from the expert hands of Helen Breen. It was a moment she’ll not soon forget as well as her supportive audience all had their phones out to capture the moment!
‘I wasn’t going to have a night in the pub or anything for it,’ the camogie legend said. ‘It was just something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. My granny and grand-uncle died from cancer a few years ago and I’ve always wanted to do something for cancer research. I wasn’t really nervous because I’ve wanted to do it for so long; mind you a couple of my friends told me they’d pay me not to do it! People were so generous though and I was delighted with how it went.’
Deirdre was over the moon with the support her venture received and, having set the goal of raising €1,000 at the start, she well and truly surpassed it having raised nearly €3,500 with money still to come in.
As well as donating the money, Deirdre also donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust who make wigs for sick children. She thanked everyone who came along on the night and everyone who contributed, both in person and through her Go Fund Me page.
As for her new look, ‘I’m starting to get used to it,’ she said. ‘Every time I go to lie down, I think I need to take my ponytail down!’
‘People are telling me I look more like my Mam and my auntie though, so it can’t be that bad!’
