Proud to celebrate 50 years in business
NESTLED at the top of Esmonde Street is a family-run business that is marking a major milestone.
Redmond Dry Cleaners is celebrating 50 years in business at number 3, Esmonde Street, where they have always been situated serving the communities from Gorey and surrounding areas.
Founded by Stephen Redmond and Maureen Redmond, the Dry Cleaners is now in the capable hands of son Stephen Redmond, along with the hard-working dedicated staff.
Stephen and Maureen travelled to Birmingham in the 50s where Maureen worked as a nurse and Stephen worked as a fitter in a factory. In Birmingham, Stephen saw the dry cleaning business as an opportunity and this inspired him to bring the idea home to Ireland – back then everyone had to send their dry cleaning to Dublin.
Once Stephen and Maureen returned, they opened Redmond Dry Cleaners on Esmonde Street in 1968 and continued the trade throughout their lives. During that time, they also started a dry cleaners in Enniscorthy in 1979 and in Tullow in 1980.
Son Stephen came on board the family-business and helped to open a premises in 1985 in Athy, county Kildare (which is still running today).
In 2003, he took over the business on Esmonde Street after being given the reins, but Maureen and Stephen still played a big role in the Dry Cleaners. Maureen worked until she was 80-years old and Stephen would regularly call in to help fix the odd broken machine,
The success of the business today would not be possible only for staff members Eileen Phayres, Sharon Byrne and Pam Levingston who have worked in the Dry Cleaners for years. Pam, who was in a serious accident earlier in the summer and is presently recovering in hospital, would like to thank all her customers for their well wishes.
Redmond Dry Cleaners is one of Wexford’s businesses who specialise in the after-care of wedding dresses, and that is down to the hard-working staff.
Stephen said he would like to praise the town for doing so well and to thank all of his loyal customers over the 50 years who regularly pop in for their Dry Cleaning. He encourages everyone to try and support their local businesses.
