Five-star start from Gorey

Impressive Rangers put Bunclody to sword in opener

-

Last season’s Wexford Volkswagen Cup winners, Gorey Rangers, have targeted a real challenge for the Premier Division crown this season and they began the season with a steely intent as they put Bunclody to the sword.

Joe Bolger and Eric Quinn both netted doubles, with Mark Woods grabbing their other goal as they ran out emphatic 5-0 winners.

Moyne Rangers also started the season with a convincing victory as they overwhelmed Bridge Rovers 4-0, thanks to a double from James Peare, a John Peare strike and an own goal.

Shamrock Rovers were made to work a lot harder as they edged out newly-promoted Rosslare Rangers in a seven-goal thriller.

John O’Connor, Ricky Dwyer (two) and Aaron Wallace scored for the Enniscorthy outfit, with Mark Furlong netting a double for Rangers and Gearóid Byrne grabbing their other goal.

Forth Celtic picked up a point against Corach Ramblers courtesy of a 2-2 draw. Jessie Farrell grabbed the opener for the Murrintown men, but the visitors edged in front with goals from Joe Sinnott and Rob Farrell.

However, Celtic upped the pressure and Lee Busher grabbed the equaliser to earn them a share of the spoils on their return to the top flight.

Elsewhere, champions North End United began the defence of their title in style with a 5-1 derby win over Wexford Bohs (see focus match).
