WEXFORDLADIES

On Sunday, August 25, we celebrated a successful year with our lady President, Róisín Leahy.

Due to the heavy rain forecast for the morning, most ladies moved their times to later in the day. However, some intrepid ladies ventured out early in the rain. Personally, I think they deserve a prize for that alone!

After all the strokes had been taken and counted and all the cards signed and returned, over 70 ladies sat down to a wonderful meal prepared by chef Emmet and his staff.

After the meal, we had some words from lady Captain Patricia and of course lady President Róisín, who announced that Bridget O’Neill will take up duty as lady President for 2019, and we wish her well for next year.

It was then time for the main business of the night, the prize-giving, and it’s fair to say there was some beautiful prizes on display to be won.

In a close competition again this year, our winner was Leonie Furlong with a fantastic score of 67 strokes. Congratulations to Leonie on her first (but not her last) Major win!

Results (18-hole strokes medal): 1, Leonie Furlong (13), 67; 2, Trina Walsh (19), 68 (back nine); 3, Kay McCabe (38), 68; gross, Ruth Kennedy, 76; 4, Elaine Mullen (21), 70 (back six); 5, Una Doherty (29), 70; Cat. A, Margaret Atkinson (10), 71; Cat. B, Patricia Boyd (22), 73; Cat. C, Mary McMahon (35), 70; 37+, Mary Rackard (37), 79; Senior, Ursula Carey (29), 75; super Senior, Pat Flanagan (30), 80; front nine, Ena O’Donoghue (28), 31; back nine, Louise Boshoff (15), 36.5; nine-hole competition, Elaine Bolger (20), 18; committee prize, Bernie Power (28), 74.

Nearest the pin on the third hole was Helen Robinson, and on the ninth hole was Mary Rice.

A total of 75 ladies played. Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to the lady President for a wonderful day.

Seniors’ competition, Monday, August 27: 1, Eileen Kent (23), 30 points; 2, Kay McCabe (38), 27 points (back seven).

After the excitement of our final Major of the year on Sunday, we got back to business as usual with an 18- hole Scotch foursomes competition, the Eleanor Conway Trophy, sponsored by Home Instead.

A total of 72 ladies played over Saturday and Thursday, August 25 and 30, and we saw a repeat performance from last year’s winners Beppi O’Connor and Mary B. O’Leary (who is definitely on a roll!).

Results: 1, Beppi O’Connor and Mary B. O’Leary (21.4), 68.6; 2, Denise Dunne and Lily Rowe (17), 70; 3, Rachel O’Connor and Helen Robinson (7.4), 70.6 (back nine); gross, Ruth Kennedy and Mary Walsh (12.2), 85; nine-hole, Mary Burke (22), 18 points (back five); nearest the pin, Denise Dunne, 3m 88 cms.

Next week’s competition is an 18-hole single stableford sponsored by Fortune Chemists, Wexford.

Huge congratulations to Carmel Murphy and Sheila Richardson who competed in the All-Ireland Australian Spoons final in Athlone on Monday, August 26, winning the gross prize against very stiff competition with a fantastic score of 34 points.

The Wexford ladies, who had the same nett score of 42 points as the overall winners, were just pipped at the post for the top prize on the back nine. It’s another fantastic achievement of which we are all very proud.

The Borris Perpetual Award (for handicaps 18-26 inclusive) will take place in Borris Golf Club on Friday, September 21. If you are interested in playing for the club, there is still time to add your name to the list in the locker room before the closing date of Thursday, September 13.

A reminder that the super draw takes place on Sunday, September 16, in the club at 9.30 p.m.
