Actress Charlie joins list of Film Society Fellows
The actress Charlie Murphy has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Wexford Film Society Fellowship which is presented annually to a Wexford person who has distinguished themselves in the world of film.
The name of the 2018 Fellow was revealed by Film Society chairman Stephen Eustace as he launched a new Picture House season of 20 art house film which will run from November to next April, featuring many many Oscar contenders such as ‘Call Me
By Your Name’ and ‘Phantom Thread’.
Charlie Murphy, a daughter of Pat and Brenda Murphy, who has starred in films such as ‘71’, Philomena and ‘ The Foreigner’ alongside Pierce Brosnan, is expected to collect her Fellowship award at a Picture House evening before Christmas. She is currently in Manchester filming her second series of ‘Peaky Blinders’ with Cillian Murphy. Her other television work includes the hit RTE drama ‘Love/Hate’ and ‘ To Walk Invisible’.
Previous Fellowship winners include writers John Banville and Billy Roche, production designers Anna Rackard and John Paul kelly, director Declan Lowney, film critic Philip Molloy and actor Gary Lydon.
The launch was attended by staff and members of the access> Cinema network who were in Wexford for the 2018 Viewing: Sessions held in the Arc Cinema last weekend. Director Maeve Cooke said they were delighted to be back in Wexford for the first time since 1996.
The new season will start with the Irish Academy Award-nominated animated film ‘ The Breadwinner on Tuesday, November 6 with films from all over the world due to be screened in subsequent weeks. From Germany, there’s the Golden Globe winning ‘In the Fade’; from Australia, the hit ‘Goldstone’, from Russia the Oscar-nominee ‘Loveless’ and from France, the documentary ‘Faces Places’. The Picture House will also provide a few classics including ‘Network’ from 1976 and Billy Wilder’s ‘ The Apartment’ from 1960.
Short films from Wexford filmmakers will also be shown during the season including Ian Power’s IFTA-nominated ‘ The Tattoo’.
