Gambling addiction to be highlighted at GAA club

-

Since 2012 over 100 GAA players sought help for gambling addiction and, as a result, Castletown Liam Mellows GAA Healthy Club have been inspired to host an event aimed at tackling the ongoing issue.

‘Behind the Jersey’ on Thursday, October 18, in the Ashdown Park Hotel, at 8 p.m., will deal with gambling addiction through numerous talks from Galway hurler Justin Campbell and former Offaly inter-county footballer Niall McNamee.

Justin is an addiction counsellor and personal coach, while Niall will give a talk about his own gambling addiction.

‘Gambling addiction is a growing problem and we wanted to invite these big names down to help raise awareness,’ said committee member Liz Gardiner.

For the second part of the evening, nutritionist Colin Smith from Ferns will discuss how to build mental and physical health through correct nutrition.

‘Colin plays a major part with the Wexford Senior Hurling team so it is great to have him on board,’ added Liz.

The Healthy Clubs, which are in every county in Ireland, aims to transform GAA clubs into health-enhancing hubs for their communities.

‘In addition to this event, we have also made areas of our club smoke free, added yoga classes and hand out fruit during half time breaks,’ added Liz.

Tickets will be available on the door for €5. Under 16s go free, but the event is for 14 years and up.
