Wexford students among Slaney Foods bursary award winners
TWO Co Wexford students hoping to go to agricultural college or study agriculture at third level have been given a boost in that goal by Slaney Foods, The Irish Hereford Society and Lidl.
The trio recently awarded five bursaries of €1,000 each to five lucky winners in Co Offaly recently, two of whom were from the model county. Anna Jacob from Enniscorthy and Diarmuid McDonald were among the five people to receive €1,000 in order to help them further their studies.
While the winners were due to be presented with their bursaries at The National Ploughing Championships, the best laid plans fell victim to Storm Ali which called a halt to the second day of the event.
Instead, each of the recipients were presented with their cheques at the nearby Tullamore Court Hotel.
Anna and Diarmuid faced stiff competition from all over the country for the prize and they had to submit an essay entitled ‘Young Farmers’ Challenges and Opportunities in Beef Farming’. Ten entrants were selected for the short- list and following interviews at the Tullamore Court Hotel, the Wexford pair were among those selected by the judge Matt Dempsey.
Although disappointed to be missing out on a day at the Ploughing, Anna and Diarmuid were delighted to have been selected and are looking forward to putting the money to good use for their studies.
