THE winds of change were well and truly blowing through the hallways of St Aidan’s Primary School last week as it was announced that long time Principal Mr Peter Creedon would be calling time on his teaching career at the end of the year. Mr Creedon has been at the helm at St Aidan’s for the past 24 years and over that period of time, it has been utterly transformed into the large, state of the art centre for education that it is today.

Initially Mr Creedon started out his career at St Thomas’s National School in Jobstown, before taking up the role of Principal at Clonegal in 1990. From here, he moved the short distance to Enniscorthy where he voraciously embraced the challenges at St Aidan’s. A rapidly expanding population in the town meant that a new, bigger school would be required, something which Mr Creedon realised early on in his time there.

‘I think the first letter on the new school was sent out in 1998,’ he recalled. ‘ That was the start of a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. Basically, we knew the numbers were going up and up and with a lot of building going on in the town in the early 2000s, we knew these numbers would be sustained. Initially, they put in prefabs, but I absolutely hated them and always wanted to get rid of them.’

After a lot of work, the new state of the art building opened in 2016, a proud day for Mr Creedon and everyone associated with the school. He now leaves things in a wonderful position as he departs his role on January 6.

‘It’s a lovely school to work in now,’ he said. ‘It’s got all the modern facilities like wifi, proper sized classrooms, lovely play areas; it’s everything

you’d want.’

The Board of Management at the school is set to begin the process of appointing Mr Creedon’s successor immediately and an announcement will be made to all parents as soon as this process is complete. Whoever they may be, they will certainly have big shoes to fill, as Mr Creedon departs with the best wishes of staff, parents and all of the pupils who have passed through the school during his tenure.

‘ There’s no particular reason for the timing bar I felt that it was just time to go and enjoy my retirement,’ Mr Creedon said. ‘I’m sure the day I walk out will be an emotional one as it’ll be the end of my career after 35 years as well as my association with the school. But as well as that, I look forward to embracing new challenges going forward.’
