Billy finishes up with ESB after 40 years

-

OVER the past forty years, there’s few areas in County Wexford that Billy Quirke from Glenbrien hasn’t attended in his capacity as an ESB worker. However, an era came to an end recently at Enniscorthy Golf Club as family, friends and colleagues gathered to wish Billy all the very best in his retirement as he embarks on a new chapter.

Starting out with the ESB as a general worker back in 1978, Billy progressed to become a driver on deliveries and with tranformers. Over the years he covered a large area all over the county and even stretching into parts of Wicklow and Carlow.

Regarded with great fondness by his colleagues, they turned out in force for Billy’s retirement do and there were presentations from ESB management, the social club and his fellow staff members and he had a great night surrounded by great friends.

When asked if he’d miss the work, Billy was frank in his reply. ‘I won’t miss the cold mornings or the late nights or trekking across fields on jobs,’ he laughed. ‘I will miss my colleagues and the craic you’d have with the lads in work though.’

In terms of plans for his retirment, Billy intends on putting the feet up for a little while at least.

‘I’ll take it easy for a while at least and settle into a new way of life as the man says. Then I suppose I can catch up on some things at home that for one reason or other you wouldn’t have had time for over the years.’
