Prisoner not in a position to complete service order

-

A GOOD excuse for failure to complete a community service order was offered at the District Court in Gorey.

The address of Bernard Egan was given in court paperwork as The Midlands Prison, Portlaoise.

Probation officer Seamus Halpenny recalled that Egan was ordered to carry out 140 hours work in lieu of a four month sentence.

In the meantime, however, he received a jail term from which he is not due for release until sometime in the year 2020.

It was accepted that, as a result, he was not in a position to complete the community service.

Judge Gerard Haughton noted that some of the hours had been completed.

He formally imposed a two month jail sentence, to be served concurrent with the existing sentence.
