Shiely brothers win with different clubs

-

IT’S NOT unusual to see two brothers winning in the Leinster championship on the same day, but there was something different about that occurrence in O’Kennedy Park, New Ross, on Saturday. Jason Shiely was first to taste success when the centre-forward pointed three frees as Tullogher-Rosbercon surprised Naomh Eanna.

And not to be outdone, big brother Eddie featured at right halfback in Horeswood’s handy victory over Mullinavat.

The Shielys, sons of Liam and Eileen, are natives of Caheragh in west Cork and started their football with the Tadhg Mac Cárthaigh club.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for one of Eddie’s teammates, Darren O’Reilly, when the Kilrossanty Senior football side he trains lost the Waterford county final to The Nire on Sunday by two points.

There was a big success on the hurling front for Enniscorthy’s Joe Fortune as he managed Ballyboden St. Enda’s to the Dublin title at the expense of Anthony Daly’s Kilmacud Crokes, who had knocked out two-time All-Ireland champions Cuala in the semi-final.

In another local link, Cormac and Darragh Wafer, who featured in Bennettsbridge’s Kilkenny final defeat to Ballyhale Shamrocks, are sons of Jimmy, the former Glynn-Barntown and Wexford Junior hurler.
