Susie’s Limerick joy
THERE WAS a Wexford connection recently when Ahane turned the tables on Granagh-Ballingarry in the Limerick Senior camogie final, winning by 1-15 to 1-8. Killurin native and former Glynn-Barntown player Susie McGovern has been plagued by injury all year and had to stop playing, but she returned to lend a hand when centre-back Judith Mulcahy broke her collar bone in the quarter-final.
She featured off the bench in the next two games and contributed a point for the victors who were inspired by Niamh Mulcahy, a sister of Judith, who scored 0-10 and earned the player of the match award.
Ahane went on to give their all in the Munster semi-final against Cork’s Inniscarra in Ballyanly on Sunday before bowing out by the same score as in the Limerick final (1-15 to 1-8).
There was a major turning point with eleven minutes left, when the visitors trailed by 0-13 to 1-7, as a shot from McGovern was saved superbly, and Inniscarra worked the ball downfield immediately to strike their decisive goal.
After already taking a year out in an effort to sort her injury problems, hopes are now high that Susie, a former Wexford player, will be in better shape for the 2019 campaign.
