Glynn’s glory!

Four goals sink Clongeen

- U14 DIVISION 4 FINAL

GLYNN-BARNTOWN 4-1 CLONGEEN 1-2

GLYNN-BARNTOWN are the ladies’ football Under-14 Division 4 champions after a hard-earned victory against a gallant Clongeen side in Taghmon recently.

The Killurin side won the toss and played with the breeze and the sun at their backs. The first quarter was very tight, with both sides hitting wide after wide, and the first score only came in the 15th minute when Josie Mullen pointed a close-range free for Glynn-Barntown.

Five minutes later they went further ahead when, in a crowded goal area, Jodie Keeling got her shot away and scored her side’s first major.

Eight minutes later Clongeen got their first and it was worth the wait. Sarah Bennett collected a loose ball on the ‘45, close to the sideline, and she took off, soloed and jinked her way inside and scored a peach of a goal.

Glynn-Barntown responded straight away with two Jodie Keeling goals and, indeed, she could have had another when she collected a Niamh Walsh cross but she was in the square and it was rightly ruled out to leave the Killurin side 3-1 to 1-0 up at the break.

In the second-half both defences were on top and scores were hard to come by.

Glynn-Barntown increased their lead in the eighth minute when Josie Mullen finished to the net, and this was to be their last score.

Clongeen scored two points within 30 seconds from Megan Byrne and Orlaith Byrne in the 20th minute but, despite lots of pressure, they couldn’t add to their tally.

In the last minute of the game Glynn-Barntown were awarded a penalty and Jodie Keeling stepped up to take it. Her well-struck shot came back off the crossbar but it mattered little as her side took a memorable title.
