An explosion of colour and creativity

-

HUNDREDS of snap-happy readers turned their lens towards the night sky to capture Wexford’s Festival Fireworks for our photo competition.

The quality of entries this year was phenomenal and you’ll find just a small selection over the next four pages.

For some, the quayfront provided the ideal backdrop, for others it was the multicoloured reflections in the harbour. There were many close-up images as well, as the fireworks created pictures in light reminiscent of abstract paintings.

Others thought outside the box, capturing the reactions on the faces in the crowd as the traditional Fireworks marked the start of this year’s Wexford Festival Opera and the festival fringe.

Our winning picture this year, from Michal Mroz, captures the fireworks in all their glory, shooting upwards in shafts of colour and then exploding in the sky in delicate circular patterns.

The picture was just one of a number of high quality images from Michal Mroz, any one of which could possibly have finished in our top three.

One of our two runners-up has no fireworks at all in the frame. Instead, Teresa Tormey focused on her own children and their cousin as they looked up, captivated by the colours dancing across the sky above their heads. The children’s expressions are priceless, each one expressing a different emotion.

Our second runner-up Adam Janiczek took his picture from roughly the same vantage point as Michal Mroz, but with a markedly different result.

His picture is dramatic, showing a blinding shaft of light piercing through a tornado-like plume of smoke being carried on the wind.

Congratulations to Michal Mroz, who receives the €100 first prize, and Teresa Tormey and Adam Janiczek, who win €50 each.

Thanks to everyone who went to the trouble of entering and sharing their view of a very special night in the Wexford calendar.
