Fire service farewell for Anthony

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

IT was the end of an era at The Riverside Park Hotel recently as members of the fire service gathered to bid a fond farewell to one of their most experienced members. For nearly 28 years, Anthony Nolan has been among the first to react in the case of emergencies in the Enniscorthy area and now, having called time on his career with the fire service, he can breath a sigh of relief, knowing that his beeper is not going to wake him in the middle of the night!

Anthony was joined by friends at colleagues at The Riverside for a special send off and tributes were paid to him by Chief Fire Officer Paul L’Estrange and Station Officer in Enniscorthy Denis Doyle, both of whom reflected on a diligent worker with an absolute wealth of knowledge and experience.

Anthony had previously reflected that when he started, the fire service operated out of ‘an old shed down by the clinic’ before eventually moving to their current home on Lymington Road. Over the years he has seen a lot, from the devastating fire at Murphy Floods in 2005 to a huge fire at the meat factory in Clohamon.

Anthony says that he loved his time with the fire service and the camaraderie that comes with it and while he will enjoy not being woken up in the middle of the night, he will no doubt be anxious to keep up to date with how his old colleagues are getting on.

The crew said that his experience and know-how will be sorely missed and were delight- ed to give him a proper send-off as he embraces retirement. A special presentation was then made to Anthony to thank him for his service.
