Kavanagh optimistic ahead of Kilmuckridge contest
FOLLOWING their selection convention in Enniscorthy, Fianna Fáil are vying to capture two of the four seats in the newly established Kilmuckridge electoral district in next year’s local elections.
While the councillors elected from Kilmuckridge will sit with Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, it creates an unusual situation as councillors who previously were part of both Enniscorthy and Gorey Districts are lining out against each other for the first time.
Four sitting councillors are hoping to retain their seats next year in Kilmuckridge, with Willie Kavanagh and Pip Breen now confirmed for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s Oliver Walsh and independent Mary Farrell also based in the new district.
While some may have thought the new electoral boundaries would cause a problem for the current Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Oylegate-based Cllr Willie Kavanagh, he says it’s not too much of a change.
‘I’m happy enough,’ he said. ‘It’s not that much of a difference. I’d always have covered half that area anyway. There are four seats and four sitting councillors, so you’d be inclined to think that maybe the four will hang onto their seats. You never know what way things will go though or who will come out of the woodwork. I’m there anyway and I’m delighted to have been picked by the party and it will be up for the people to decide.’
