Man charged with assault is remanded in custody

-

A 30-YEAR-OLD man with a Ferns address made no application for bail as he appeared before the District Court in Wexford last Tuesday charged with assault.

Patrick Somers of 26 Coolbawn in Ferns stood accused of assault causing harm to Louise Jordan at St Mary’s Villas in Bunclody.

The court sitting was due to deal with family law but the case of DPP v Patrick Somers was called first, before the list of scheduled matters. Evidence was heard from Garda John Cleary who stated that he arrested the defendant at Graiguebeg in Bunclody at 7.30 a.m. the previous day.

The arrested man was then conveyed to the garda station in Enniscorthy.

Next into the witness box was Garda Olive McNamara who told the judge that she formally charged the accused in the barracks shortly after 9 p.m.

He made no reply.

Arklow based solicitor David Tarrant attended court to represent Patrick Somers, saying that his client had no bail application to make at this time.

Mr Tarrant was instructed to consent to a week long remand in custody to the court sitting in Wexford of December 4.

Legal aid was granted after the solicitor revealed that Somers was unemployed.

Sergeant Victor Isdell had no directions in the matter from the DPP.
