ST CORMAC’S NEWS

A frosty start to the day on Saturday, February 2, saw all but the under-13 game cancelled. Even this one was postponed till the afternoon and playing away to Ferns, they took an early lead with a Callum Byrne free that zipped past the keeper. Ferns fought back and drew level just before half-time and then proceeded to dominate the second half, adding two more goals. Despite losing 1-3, our lads played great football, especially goalie Ciarán Murphy, who made some spectacula­r saves and Evan Dunne and Abram O’Neill, who never gave up till the final whistle.

SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY

Boolavogue’s Foróige Club hosted their annual senior citizen’s Party on Sunday, February 3, and the assembled host was right royally entertaine­d and fed. They sat down to a three course meal, were plied with all sorts of exotic alcohols and then danced off all the extra calories to the dulcet tones of Lar Kenny.

BIGGEST LOSER

On Saturday, February 2, the first event of the GAA club’s ‘Biggest Loser’ fundraiser took place. A great crowd took part in the 5km walk/run, strting from the GAA pitch at 9 a.m., they headed off past the graveyard and returned via Ballymotey Cross. There will be a 5km walk/run each Saturday, alternatin­g between Monageer and Boolavogue and each one will start at 9 a.m.

Everyone, old and young, fast or slow, stroller or sprinter, is invited along and the event will take place come hail, rain, frost or snow. Last weekend’s walk was in Boolavogue and this weekend’s, on Saturday the 16th. will be in Monageer once again. For further details, please contact any member of the committee.

TRACTOR RUN THANKS

The GAA club would like to thank all those who supported their annual Tractor Run on Sunday, February 3, especially the Hawkins family Clondaw, who put in huge energy and effort to organise the event. In the big raffle run on the day, Mylo Fenlon won the driver’s prize, Paddy Breen won a drum of oil, Michael Brooks won a bottle of whiskey and Brian Lacey won a voucher for the Courtyard in Ferns. Andy Fenlon won a warm jacket, Mervyn Hawkins a hamper, Andy Rigley a drum of oil, Niall Finn a load of firewood, Conor Walsh a voucher for Turk Cuts, Niall O’Reilly a box of chocolates, Tommy Breen a bird box, Lar Daly a bottle of wine, John Fenlon a tin of celebratio­ns, David Breen a bottle of red wine, with the final prize, a T-shirt, going to Cathy Ryan.

GAA NEWS

The under-13 boys have their first Lenister League game this weekend, when they travel to Carlow on Saturday the 16th. They have been involved in serious preparatio­n already, training in the Buffers Alley indoor arena on Saturday mornings and doing circuit training and conditioni­ng every Thursday evening.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

Any group interested in taking part in the St Patrick’s Day parade in the Harrow, are asked to contact Eithne Turner or Caroline Farrington in order to book their place. This promises to be a very enjoyable and family friendly event with a very special guest acting as Grand Marshal to oversee the action and with St Patrick and famed Fr Murphy taking part in the march-past.

MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST

On Saturday, February 16, at the Vigil Mass, Noeleen Hennessy is the Eucharisti­c Minister on duty while on Sunday morning at the 11 a.m. Mass, Monica Gahan will help distribute Holy Communion.

CLOTHES COLLECTION

Monageer-Boolavogue GAA Club is continuing to collect used clothes for recycling, to raise much needed funds for the club. They welcome all donations of unwanted clothes, paired shoes, hats, scarves, handbags, curtains, clean towels, duvet covers, pillow cases and clean bed linen. However, they don’t want duvets or cushions at all, please. All donations can be left into the old GAA complex in Monageer from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. till 4.30 p.m.

WEXFORD WATER SAFETY AGM

Wexford Water Safety’s AGM will take place on March 2 at 7.30 p.m. in the Talbot Hotel, Wexford.
