ST PATRICK’S WEEKEND RUN/WALK

Galbally Sports and Leisure Club will host a 10k run and 5k walk on bank holiday Monday, March 18. The event will begin at 11 a.m., with registration taking place from 10 a.m. onwards. Entry fee is €5 for the 5k walk and €10 for the 10k run. Both events are open to all ages and abilities. The 10k race will be chip timed and there will be prizes for the first man and woman home. Refreshments will be served to all participants in the hall afterwards. Everyone is invited to come along and get involved in what promises to be a great community event.

DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION AGM

The 20 first annual general meeting of Clonroche Development Association Clg was held in Clonroche Community Centre on Monday, February 4.

Chairman Lorcan Dunne welcomed all present and stated that Clonroche Development Association Clg had instigated significant achievements for the village during their period of twenty-one years. The maintenance of the village in litter control, grass and verges maintenance, hedge cutting, planting, Christmas lighting, the Parish Party, St Patrick’s Day parade. The Penny Bank. To this could be added the Millennium Park, Ballymackessey Wood Walk, The John’s Lane Project, Footpath and street lighting extensions, the CE, RSS, Tús schemes brought to the village, administered and sponsored by the Development Association, and numerous other activities.

We also purchase and maintain Lawn Mowers, Strimmer’s, Sprayers, Ride on Mower, Tractor, Litter pickers, spades, brushes etc. We are eternally grateful to Jeff and Hazel Sage, who recently donated a Footpath Sweeper and Leaf Blower for the betterment of the village.

One of our biggest achievement will be realised this spring with the completion of the seven-acre amenity area at Spout Road. The area will contain a 58 space car park, Machinery Shed, Canteen, Toilets, Walking Tracks, and Children’s Playground. It will include carpark and track lighting and most importantly an open space for the enjoyment of the entire community and open space never available to the village and area before.

Continuing, the chairman expressed the wish that more younger people would join the association and take responsibility for the maintenance and development of their village, but alas after widespread publicity and an open invitation to attend the AGM and ‘give a hand’ the attendance clearly demonstrated that this was being left to the ‘Old Reliables’. He went on to state that a sophisticated network of contacts, responsibilities, and management were involved in the operation of the association and it was desirable that the workings of these structures be communicated to the people taking ownership and responsibilities for the maintenance and development of the village in the future.

The people supporting splitthe-pot each week and most of the businesses in the village who supported this venture were thanked for their backing as this income helped pay the considerable expenses of the association in the upkeep of machines, petrol, seed and plants, insurance and ancillary expenses not to mention machine replacement Rev Ian Cruikshank took the chair for the election of officers for the coming year and expressed his wish that more people would become involved and that there would be a culture of varying of officers at appropriate periods.

SPLIT-THE-POT

The winner of this week’s splitthe-pot, Drawn in the Cloch Ban, was Nora Carthy Snr, Ballyboro. The pot was €250. All proceeds help with the maintenance and development of the village. We appreciate very much the people who support us.

CHELTENHAM PREVIEW NIGHT

The Cloughbawn GAA Club Cheltenham Preview Night will take place on March 2 in Riverside Park Hotel, the Panel on the night will be David Jennings – Racing Post, Joseph O’Brien, John Joseph (Shark) Hanlon, Daryl Jacob, Seán Flanagan and Jamie Codd. Admission €20 with fantastic door prize on the night, raffle and spot prizes also throughout the night. COMMUNITY GAMES

Community Chess and Draughts has resumed in Galbally Hall on Wednesday nights from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. All children from eight years to 15 years are welcome. Cost is €2 per child to a maximum of €4 per family. The Co Community Games will begin shortly. The local area will be represented in quiz, Talent, art, Swimming, Athletics, Chess, Draughts and tag rugby.
