ST CORMAC’S NEWS

St Cormac’s ‘A’ team moved into third place in their division on Friday hte February 8, beating a determined Gorey Celtic by 1-0 in Gorey’s grounds outside the town. James Sweeney put them ahead half-way through first half and the team then defended doggedly throughout the second half to claim all the points.

On Sunday the 10th the Men’s other team, the ‘B’ squad were away to Ross Town and won 4-3 after a nerve jangling game. Ray O’Brien floated a sweet corner shot across the box half-way through the first half and Niall Finn obliged by nodding it to the net. The home team were soon level and the sides remained equal up to the break. Our lads pulled ahead early in the second-half, this time with Harry Ellix heading on towards the fleet-footed Nathan Dickson, who slotted home the second goal. Nathan was taken down in the box shortly aferwards, rushing on to another Harry Ellix pass, and Niall Finn converted to leave it at 3-1. New Ross showed why their attack is so respected by drawing level and with less than 10 minutes remaining, it looked as if the points would be shared. But Ray O’Brien, who had created the first scoring chance, made sure of the last one and rattled the Ross net for a well deserved 4-3 win.

This win meant that all three ‘senior’ teams won as the ladies’ team had caused an upset in the cup earlier on Sunday, beating Division 1 team, Kilmore in the Wexford cup, by 2-1. Kilmore took an early lead only to have April Breen find the net for our girls shortly afterwards. Despite dominating the rest of the half, Cormac’s could not score but with 15 minutes still to be played, Kate Cullen latched on to a sweet cross from Lorraine O’Connor to score our second goal. Kilmore never gave up a were it not for a brilliant save from Charlene D’Arcy, minutes from the end, the game would have had to to to extra time.

The previous day the under-16s boys were at home to Ballymurn Celtic and thanks to goals from TJ Breen and Fionn Walsh, our lads won by 2-0. Éanna Swords between the posts made one great save but Ballymurn never looked too threatening.
