Dunne does damage

- MICHAEL HEFFERNAN

MATTHEW DUNNE was in blistering in Monageer-Boolavague’s trimming of Davidstown-Courtnacuddy as the wily full-forward struck 3-8, all but one point from play, in this Group B tie in the opening round of the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Junior football championship in Bree on Saturday.

The eventual winners raced into a four-point lead within three minutes, with Dunne, and Mark and Liam Gahan on target.

Mick Sweeney came close to hitting the net minutes later, only to see his shot kept out by Seán Howlin, but his side weren’t worried as they hit another five scores in as many minutes, racking up a nine-point lead before their opponents could even create a chance.

Dunne and Gahan were causing endless problems as they seemed to score every time they gathered possession, with help from Noel Rowsome, Micheál Gahan and Mark Walsh.

Davidstown-Courtnacuddy were struggling greatly but there was no let-up from their opponents who kicked a massive 13 points without reply, before James Kelly eventually got his side off the mark with a point in the 28th minute.

But, 30 seconds later, Mark Gahan pounced for his side’s first goal after receiving an excellent pass from Matthew Dunne.

Kelly then traded scores with Mark Gahan before the break to leave 15 points between the sides.

Davidstown-Courtnacuddy rallied as much as they could and hit 1-2 within eight minutes, with the goal from Dylan Martin.

All their good work was undone as Cathal Walsh hit the net with an excellent finish, and Dunne struck for his first goal moments later.

Monageer-Boolavogue then continued to torture their opponents as Mark Walsh and Matthew Dunne hit the net twice more.

The onslaught was completed when Cathal Walsh hit his second goal and Matthew Dunne added his third, making it a 30-point win.
