New wall in ICU for rescued seals
HEITON Buckley in Gorey has partnered with Seal Rescue Ireland to help improve its on-site intensive care unit, which holds great importance for rescued seals’ chances of survival and longterm recovery at the sanctuary centre in Courtown.
The charity organisation works to nurse recovered seals back to health from its dedicated rescue centre before releasing the animals back into their natural habitat. Heiton Buckley building suppliers has provided the team in Courtown with the materials for a new wall in its ICU.
Robert Deacon, branch manager at Heiton Buckley Gorey said ‘ The new built structure will hopefully contribute to the accelerated recovery of hundreds of seals across Ireland’.
Seal Rescue Ireland takes in around 150 seals each year and all of these mammals that arrive at the centre tend to spend some time in the ICU. Jeshua Taucher of Seal Rescue Ireland said that ‘ The old ICU wall, which consisted of a large piece of black plastic sheeting, provided some minimal protection from heavy rains and blew around violently when gusty conditions swept into the centre from the Irish Sea’. He thanked Heiton Buckley Gorey and explained that the new wall will directly improve future rescued seals’ chances of survival as the animals stress levels will be significantly reduced.
With the construction of the wall, seals will no longer be exposed to the natural elements in Courtown and can use their energy instead to repair and recover from illness, gain weight and return to the sea healthy and ready to fend for themselves.
