Youngsters impress at the county chess finals

-

THE FIRST Community Games county team final was the Under-13 chess competition, held in the G.A.A. Complex in Piercestown.

It’s great to see the Rosslare Area now up and running, and they were involved here along with Glynn-Barntown, Taghmon, Bree/Davidstown, Castlebridge/Crossabeg and Piercestown-Murrintown (with two teams).

The children eagerly got down to the games in hand. Many of the teams had very young children playing, and their knowledge of the game was quite impressive.

Castlebridge/Crossabeg had a great start in round one, amassing four and a half points, with Piercestown/Murrintown ‘A’ and Taghmon both on three points.

Castlebridge/Crossabeg kept up their good showing in round two with another four and a half points, while Piercestown/Murrintown ‘A’ scored four points as did Taghmon. They were followed by Bree/Davidstown on two and a half.

Castlebridge/Crossabeg were now on nine points, with Piercestown-Murrintown and Taghmon both on 7.

It was all down to the last round and four teams were still in contention, while Rosslare, Glynn-Barntown and the ‘B’ team from Piercestown/Murrintown were still giving it their all and enjoying themselves and the experience.

Castlebridge/Crossabeg scored four points in the last round to take their final total to 13.

Piercestown/Murrintown battled back and took the full five points to finish up on twelve, with Bree/Davidstown filling third spot on nine and a half points.

The winning team had Peter Kenny, Bronagh Boggan, Max Sweetman, Kate Kenny, Cathal Maher and substitutes Tom Carty and John Kenny on their panel.

They now go forward to play the Leinster first and second rounds in Carlow on Saturday, April 6. We wish them well.

Wexford Community Games extend thanks to the local Piercestown/Murrintown Community Games committee for organising the competition and for the welcome cup of tea during the event.

Thanks also to Jim Doyle who co-ordinated the event, to adjudicators Eilis Casey, Martin Humphrey and Rory O’Mahony, and to scorekeeper Ann O’Mahony.
