Local solicitor John O’Leary is to become a judge

- By BRENDAN KEANE

ONE of Enniscorthy’s most well known and highly respected solicitors has been appointed as a district court judge.

John O’Leary, from Frizelle O’Leary Solicitors, got the call from Minister Charlie Flanagan on Tuesday to inform him that he had been selected for appointment.

Speaking to this newspaper Mr O’Leary said he was ‘amazed and delighted’ to get the call.

He is creating his own bit of history too as he is the first solicitor from Enniscorthy town to be appointed as a district court judge.

Educated in the CBS in Enniscorthy and at Clongowes Wood College, in Naas, Mr O’Leary qualified as a solicitor, from UCD and the Law Society, in the early 1980s, and started with his firm in 1983 before becoming a partner with Harry Frizelle in 1986.

‘I learned a lot from Harry and from Noel Redmond,’ Mr O’Leary told this newspaper.

He also complimented people like Mary Dolan, Annette McCarthy and Suzanne Carthy for their work with the company.

Mr O’Leary will spend the next couple of weeks extracting himself from his own role in the company and will know where he will be appointed to in May.

‘I am very grateful to my parents for the education they gave me,’ said Mr O’Leary,

Unfortunately, both his parents are deceased and never got to see their son receive his appointment.

He also expressed regret that his colleague Marie Frizelle, who passed away recently, also didn’t get to see it happen.

‘It’s exciting and I am delighted to be appointed,’ said Mr O’Leary.
