Things are looking up at St. Peter’s College!

-

THERE was a flurry of activity at St Peter’s College on Friday morning as a huge crane lifted a new observation point onto the top of the old tower there. The idea is one which has been in the pipeline for some time and the school were delighted to finally lift the steel-framed, glass box into place.

When completed, the observation point will offer 360 degree panoramic views of Wexford town and may prove to be a major attraction in itself. ‘Basically the roof was in need of some repairs anyway,’ said former Principal Pat Quigley who is a member of the St Peter’s campus committee.

‘It was decided that while we were in the process of carrying out these repairs, we would add this viewing cabin to the top of the tower. I was up there myself this morning and the views of Wexford are very impressive.’

‘We haven’t a definite date for when it will be up and running just yet,’ Pat continued.

‘We’re taking things step by step. It’s a massive undertaking. The next step is that we’re refurbishing the internal part of the tower and the mechanism is gone in the clock in the tower, so we’re looking to restore that too.’

The majority of the work is being undertaken by Gabbett’s, with Senator windows providing the glass for the viewing cabin. The project is an exciting one and it is hoped that St Peter’s College, with it’s Pugin chapel and vast array of historical documents, may become a visitor attraction in it’s own right.

The possibility of opening the viewing point up to the general public is currently being explored as the preservation and maintenance of these historic buildings continues.
