Chat and acuppa

The first Tuesday of each month will see a coffee and chat initiative taking place as part of Wexford County Council’s Cultural Companions initiative.

The scheme is aimed at encouraging older people to attend arts and cultural events throughout the county and is run by a voluntary committee.

The initiative was launched early last year through Age Action coordinator Ann Marie Laffan who told this newspaper that for many older people isolation or fear of being alone going to an event were among the reasons that they don’t attend things they have an interest in.

However, the aim of Cultural Companions is to combat that and enable people to meet up with like-minded individuals so they don’t just get to experience concerts and exhibitions they are interested in but also get a new circle of friends.

As part of that overall scheme the coffee and chat events will take place on the first Tuesday of each month and people will be encouraged to drop in and meet other people in similar situations to themselves.
