Exhibition shines a light on autism
IMAGES OF AUTISM is a photographic exhibition by the Cottage Autism Network (CAN) Photography Group which was launched by Cllr Michael Sheehan in New Ross Library last Tuesday on World Autism Awareness Day.
Nine adult members of CAN took part in a photography course – which was supported through the Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Boards’ Community Education Programme – over a number of months with adult education tutor Kristin Gray. They produced a beautiful, honest and eclectic collection of images depicting everyday life in families with experience of autism.
The photography exhibition and accompanying booklet tells the story of the diverse nature of Autism Spectrum Disorder, highlighting the many strengths of autism and creating awareness of some of the challenges experienced by those living with autism. It is hoped that this powerful exhibition will help to promote understanding and acceptance of autism in our communities.
CAN provides support to those impacted by autism spectrum disorder and their families through raising awareness of autism and related issues and providing information on autism and related issues to health professionals and other interested parties. CAN also run training for parents, carers and professionals on autism-related topics.
