Barntown seal win

Goals made the difference for Glynn

- BRIAN CARTY

GLYNN-BARNTOWN 3-7 CASTLETOWN 0-10

THE OLD adage ‘goals win games’ certainly rang true at Monamolin on Sunday when Glynn-Barntown squeezed out a deserved 3-7 to 0-10 victory over a wasteful Castletown in Group A of the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Junior football championship.

The north county men will feel aggrieved at one moment in the second-half which summed up their day and which ultimately defined the game.

Darragh Brooks had swung over two impressive points to edge them within 2-3 to 0-7, and when they were awarded a penalty soon after, Gavin Stamp had the chance to establish Castletown’s first lead. However, their top scorer crashed the spot-kick off the crossbar as Glynn-Barntown were let off the hook.

The Wexford District side then went up the other end of the pitch for Jamie Crean to notch a point, and when Darragh Nolan and Jack Brazill combined to play in Matthew Joyce, he buried his chance as they suddenly sat 3-4 to 0-8 in front after 43 minutes.

The same player tagged on a point one minute later, and Bill Joyce and Crean (free) added late scores which were cancelled out by a pair of Stamp placed balls.

Glynn-Barntown had enjoyed a fruitful start to proceedings when Jack Brazill supplied Darragh Nolan and he side-footed to the net after four minutes.

Sixty per cent of Castletown’s tally came from Stamp frees, and he registered twice before a neat brace from the influential Brazill kept Glynn-Barntown on the front foot.

Andy Merrigan and Shane Halpin supplemented Stamp’s third free of the opening half as Castletown looked to be back in contention approaching the short whistle (1-3 to 0-5), but all their good work was undone with the concession of a game-altering goal in injury-time.

Stephen Lyne had made the initial venture forward, and when he was unceremoniously taken down in the square by Niall Hempenstall, Brazill emphatically thumped home the penalty.

Glynn-Barntown have two wins from two in the group, while Castletown’s draw with Sarsfields in round one sees them currently occupy fourth place.
