Another defeat for Minor camogie side

-

GALWAY WEXFORD 2-12 0-10

WEXFORD WERE competitive in the re-match of the 2016 All-Ireland Under-16 camogie final as the Slaneysiders bowed out of the Minor equivalent with a loss to Galway in Páirc Uí Shíocháin, Gorey, on Sunday.

Neil Cullen’s side came into the game out of contention for a semi-final place after losing their first three games, but they stayed with the westerners for most of this contest before falling by eight points.

The Slaneysiders managed only 1-31 in their four games and that is hardly a recipe for success at this level. As well as their scoring trouble in general, they have been heavily reliant on Anais Curran, who grabbed nine of their ten points in this game.

She had the first two Wexford point, but an early Galway penalty had the visitors on the front foot.

Andrea Fielding registered for her side and Curran added another brace before the break, but the hosts still trailed by 1-4 to 0-5 at the change of ends.

Curran notched five more scores for the hosts but Galway’s second goal in the final quarter ended the game as a contest.

After this disappointing All-Ireland series, Wexford break for the Leaving Cert. They will return for the Leinster championship campaign, which has returned to round-robin format, on July 3.

All three games for the Slaneysiders, against Dublin, Offaly and Kilkenny, are away from home.

Elsewhere, there was mixed news for the Under-16s who were in Leinster championship action themselves in Craanford on Sunday. The ‘B’ team finished bottom of their group after suffering their third straight loss, 2-9 to 0-11 against Meath. That sees them into a ‘B’ shield semi-final opposite Westmeath.

There was better news for the ‘A’ side as they bounced back from defeat against Kilkenny with a big win against Offaly in their second game (9-11 to 2-2). They have one game left in the round-robin stages, at home to Dublin this Sunday, and if they can claim a surprise win they will qualify for the Leinster ‘A’ final opposite Kilkenny.

Details of the venue and time were not supplied to this paper at the time of print, while the Minor team line-out was not forthcoming from the County Board by the time we went to press either despite our request for same in an effort to give the players some publicity.
