Tuesday, April 2, saw 64 ladies take part in a fourball better ball competitio­n which was sponsored by Farrell’s Chemist..

Our winning pair were our Vice-Captain, Julie McCarthy, and Ann Bernie with 43 points, and our runners-up were Marie Dunphy and Margaret Frayne on 42 points (back nine).

Nine-hole competitio­n: 1, Margaret Mooney, 15 points; 2, Marina Hatton, 14 points.

DONOHOE’S SOCIETY

Donohoe’s Society played Enniscorth­y Golf Club on Saturday. On a fine day for golf, we had 19 players in total.

Results: 1, Andrew Holden, who is making a habit of winning, with 36 points; 2, John Cahill, 33 points; 3, Cliff Weeber, 33 points.

Cliff also had a birdie on the twelfth hole. Nearest the pin was John Sullivan, and the longest drive went to Billy Larkin.

Next Sunday we play Quinnagh House. Please be there by 8.45 a.m.

COURTOWN

The open gents’ singles on Wednesday was won by Pat McCarthy (23) with 40 points. Runner-up was Paddy Hughes (22) with 37 points (back nine), while Cathal O’Donohoe (18) was third, also with 37 points.

Best gross was Cillian Hughes (5) with 34 points. The eleven-hole competitio­n was won by Adam Spencer (7) with 21 points.

The gents’ Seniors due to be held on Thursday was called off due to the weather.

Saturday saw a ladies’ and gents’ singles competitio­n. Victory went to Bernard Byrne (15) with 42 points.

Second was Colm Sheehan (3) with 40 points, while third was Tom Fleming (22) with 38 points, and fourth was Jimmy Woods (14) with 37 points.

Catherine Lysaght (30) won the ladies with 33 points, while runner-up was Norma Casey (26) on 32 points.

Sunday was an any combinatio­n ladies’ and gents’ Scotch foursomes. In first place with a net 66 were Mark Morris (7) and Pádraic Flood (13).

Second were Pat Kenny (11) and Pat Donnellan (13) on 67 (last nine), and third were Mick Morrissey (5) and Ralph Lennon (11), also on 67.

The entry date for the club matchplay competitio­ns has been extended to this Wednesday, April 10. The draw will take place immediatel­y after the Wednesday singles competitio­n, so this is your last chance to get your entries in.

There are four different matchplay competitio­ns - gents’ singles, gents’ fourball, gents’ foursomes and mixed. Entry fees for the singles competitio­n is €5, and for the fourball, foursomes and mixed it’s €10.

NEWROSS SENIORS

The Seniors gave strong support to the club open champagne scramble on Thursday when the weather held dry but bitterly cold.

We resume as usual this week with the draw for teams at 10.40 a.m. sharp. All players who intend travelling to our next away outing at Bunclody on Tuesday, April 23, should bring along their entry fee on Thursday of €25 which includes a donation towards extra prizes.

On the board for April are Tony Sexton, Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan and Michael Gannon. Full results from the Dundrum visit will be available next week.

NEWROSS

Last weekend saw the annual Spring Cup strokes competitio­n played by a field of over 150 golfers.

The competitio­n was sponsored by J.D. North’s bar for the second year and the scoring was very impressive.

The Tuesday evening fourball was sponsored by some anonymous members.

Results: 1, Noel Dunne (20) and Jimmy Furlong (13), 28 points; 2, Paddy Doyle (18) and John Purdy (17, Wexford), 27 points; 3, John Murphy (12) and Pat Doyle (16), 25 points (last nine).

On Thursday we had an open four-person scramble sponsored by Ray Murphy Insurance Assessor which turned in high scoring and competitiv­e golf.

Next weekend’s competiton is an 18-hole stableford competitio­n sponsored by Creane and Creane Insurance.

The presentati­on of prizes for last week’s Tuesday fourball, last week’s scramble and the Spring Cup will take place at 8 p.m. All winners are asked to attend.

Entries are now being taken for the men’s foursomes matchplay, and all new members are asked to take part also. This matchplay event within the club is a useful way of meeting other members also and preparing for inter-club events.

The entry fee for each team is €15. Entries should be placed in the men’s competitio­n box, with the envelope clearly marked foursomes matchplay.

The closing date for entries is Tuesday, April 23, with the draw taking place that night following the presentati­on.

We encourage all prize-winners to attend and look forward to a good turn-out of lady members at the fashion show.

Congratula­tions to Rosslare Golf Club’s ladies’ Minor cup team (handicap 22-27) , substitute­s and their managers who won their match against Woodenbrid­ge in Wexford on Sunday.

It was a riveting afternoon of competitio­n in glorious sunshine but windy conditions which came down to the last match on the 18th. Bravo all and good luck in the next round.

Our Intermedia­te cup team (handicap16-21) play St. Helen’s in Wexford on Sunday, April 14, at 2.30 p.m. Please come along and support.

The first practice evening of the Ladies Into Golf programme starts this evening at 6.30 p.m. There are a few places available. If interested please call Anne (0868510005).

A wonderful social evening including a table quiz was held on Friday at the clubhouse, and thanks to all for their support. The new summer wine and cocktail list was launched to great approval.

WEXFORD LADIES

A total of 25 ladies played on Monday, April 1, in the Senior competitio­n.

Winner of the March Sunday nine-hole competitio­n was Mary McMahon (17) with a score of 22 points.

On Monday evening, April 15, we have the U.S. Masters par three competitio­n as a fundraiser for our club Juniors. There’s a €10 entry fee and it is always great fun!

ROSSLARE

Players from 26 clubs took part in the revived Rosslare Senior Scratch Cup recently.

The winner was local man Gary Collins who put together two rounds of 73 and won on the breakdown from Gerard Dunne (Co. Louth) whose first round of 69 was the best of the day. In third place was former Waterford Senior hurler Paul Flynn (Tramore) on71, 76.

On 148 was Keith Murphy (Dun Laoghaire) with 73, 75, while Ross McCormack (Palmerstow­n House) was fifth on 149 (72, 77).

Liam Grehan (Mullingar) won the first 18 with 73, and Tony O’Leary (Rosslare) won the second 18, also with a

73. Gerry Santry (Faithlegg) won the overall nett.

On Friday night, April 19, Jamie O’Sullivan is running an historic time night of golf called Lunar Golf. The event will be played in teams of four over eight holes, with the golfers wearing headlamps and high viz jackets, and using luminous golf balls.

Well done to Paul Murphy who finished third in the Argonaut Invitation­al in Florida, shooting three under for the 54-hole competitio­n. Paul is attending Montevallo College on a golf scholarshi­p.

The Barton Cup team had a winning start on Saturday, beating neighbours St. Helen’s. Liam McNamara and Ken Maher won at home on the 15th, while Jim Cullimore and Derek Evans did likewise on the 19th.

In St. Helen’s, Rory Deane and Cillian Corkery won to seal victory, while Joe Moran and Willie White were level playing the second tie hole, and Niall Griffin and Pierce Frawley were two down playing the 16th.
