SHOCK AND HEARTACHE AT DEATH OF TWO-YEAR-OLD IN ACCIDENT

THERE were heartbreaking scenes witnessed in Enniscorthy last weekend as the funeral took place of two-year-old, Corey McCarthy, who died following an accident on Wednesday.

Corey, from Ard Alainn, Enniscorthy, was laid to rest on Saturday and the very high regard in which his family is held was underlined by the large gathering of mourners who arrived at St Aidan’s Cathedral to offer their support to his grief-stricken parents, siblings and relatives.

The accident that claimed the life of the child occurred at Carrigabruse at around 4.30p.m. on Wednesday.

It happened at an industrial yard and the toddler was removed from the scene to Wexford General Hospital.

Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased in hospital a short time later.

A spokesperson for Enniscorthy gardai described the incident as an ‘unfortunate accident’.

As with any accident involving a fatality on an industrial site the accident is also being investigated by the Health and Safety Authority.

At Saturday’s funeral the mourners were told how Corey had touched the lives of many people and that the enormity of the tragedy could not be put into words.

During the funeral service the level and importance of the support given by the community to little Corey’s parents and family was highlighted and chief celebrant, Fr Billy Swan, also asked the mourners to remember Corey’s late brother, Dean, who passed away a number of years ago.

Members of his family brought up three mementos of Corey’s life during the mass; his photo, his toy digger and three jerseys, which reflected a life that while cut tragically short had a major impact on the lives of those who knew him.

Corey is survived by his parents, Patrick and Sharyn, siblings, Micayla, Kelsey, grandparents, Josie and Jimmy McDonald, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and family friends.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dean, and by his grandparents, Martin and Kay Cullen.

Following the mass Corey’s remains were laid to rest in St Mary’s Cemetery.
