Horeswood make most of first use of strong wind

- JASON GOODISON

HORESWOOD 1-13 M’TOWN-C’DOCKRELL 1-7

HORESWOOD PROVED to be too strong for their Group B counterparts Marshalstown-Castledockrell as they got their Permanent TSB Junior hurling championship campaign off to a winning start in Bree on Saturday.

Similar to Gusserane in the game before them, they made the most of the strong wind in the first-half as they gained a substantial lead by the interval and left Marshalstown-Castledockrell simply too far behind to mount a comeback.

Despite dominating for the majority of the half, they did find themselves behind against the run of play in the early stages when Diarmuid Doyle finished into the net after an impressive forward run.

To Horeswood’s credit, they didn’t stay behind for long and, after Seán Nolan put their noses in front with a well-taken point, Jack Kehoe put some distance between the sides as he pulled into the net with one hand on the hurl (1-5 to 1-1).

Two Eoin Bennett points for Marshalstown-Castledockrell were answered by five more Horeswood minors before the interval, with Kehoe, Seán Stafford, Declan Murphy and Nolan all on target as they stretched their lead to seven (1-10 to 1-3).

The second-half was significantly quieter and in truth that suited Horeswood down to the ground.

Marshalstown-Castledockrell won the half by four points to three but that margin was nowhere near enough for them to force their way back into the game.

Kehoe pointed again for the eventual winners either side of two Diarmuid Doyle frees. Substitute Craig Murphy got on Horeswood’s scoresheet from a narrow angle, and Colm Bennett smashed over an impressive point on the 50-minute mark.

Marshalstown-Castledockrell tried to find their way through Horeswood’s defence in search of a goal but it wasn’t forthcoming, and Michael Kinsella settled for the final point in the 58th minute.

Horeswood will be looking to make it two from two next weekend as they take on Ferns St. Aidan’s, while the losers will play Faythe Harriers.
