NEWROSSSENIORS

We started off with the first leg of our trip to Tipp 2019 last week when we were based in the beautiful Dundrum Hotel and Golf Club.

We were treated like royalty with our every need looked after in a most professional way. From arrival to departure the staff both in the hotel and Pro Shop could not have been more helpful in ensuring that our 24-strong group enjoyed their stay.

The course itself, playing 6,169 off the forward tees, was in magnificent condition with lightning-like greens more akin to Augusta than Ireland.

There were some long holes, particularly the seventh, playing some 535 yards and that from a forward position. It was a tough test in cold but dry weather and some great scores were recorded on day one, none better than the 95 points from Seamus Power (15), Seán O hUginn (23), Pat Kehoe (24) and Martin Burke (25) who finished in the number one spot.

Runners-up with 93 points were Pat Traynor (18), Billy Redmond (19), John Joe Murray (21) and Tom Kent (25). Placed third were Denis Kirwan (12), Larry Shannon (21), Frank Boyle (23) and Les Jastrebski (25) with 92 points.

After a sumptuous evening dinner, luxurious accommodation, and a full Irish breakfast, the six four-person teams were ready to tackle the course once again.

With the sun shining and the greens drying out as the day went on, scoring became more difficult than on day one. Putts were rolling up to the pin and then rolling back down again, often times off the green.

However, it was as good for the goose as it was for the gander, and Tom Duggan (18), Hughie O’Connor (19), Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (25) and the inimitable Les Jastrebski (25) took the honours, registering 92 points.

Second place went to Billy Redmond, (19), Seán O hUginn (23), Frank Boyle (23) and Pat Kehoe (24) with 91 points, whilst Denis Kirwan (12), John Murphy (20), Jamesie Murphy (24) and Martin Burke (25) took third spot with 87 points.

The group would like to express their gratitude to Reservations Manager, Dolores Thornton, and the staff at Dundrum for making our trip such an enjoyable one in such splendid surroundings.

Back at the ranch on Thursday, twelve teams took part in our weekly outing in dry but cold conditions, with a chilling south-easterly wind sweeping the course.

Playing the favoured champagne scramble format, scoring again was excellent. Although no team reached the century mark, one made a valiant effort to do so.

Eamon Delaney (17), Martin Forristal (21), Dick Cahill (23) and Martin Furlong (24) went within a point of it, carding 99.

Second, one point behind, were Dick Cuddihy (13), Brian Dolan (21), Aidan Wallace (22) and Michael Long (23). Third place went to Willie Whitty (18), Billy Redmond (19), Aidan Kent (22) and Fr. Jim Curtis (23) with 94 points.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Kavanagh on the ninth hole and Seán O hUginn on the eleventh.

Best wishes for speedy recoveries go to John F. Roche and Paddy Bennett, both of whom have been indisposed recently.
