Creative spirits will feature on local radio next month

- By SIMON BOURKE

The winning entrants in this year’s Creative Spirit Awards received a special surprise when they learned their work is to feature on South East Radio next month.

Now in their fourth year, the Creative Spirit Awards are a joint initiative from the Christian Media Trust and Diocesan Pastoral Council and see children from all over the county undertake projects on a set theme. This year’s theme was ‘How an I save the Environment?’ and tasked schoolchildren with creating short stories, art or prayers based on environmental issues.

Held at Clonard Community Centre, the awards night was hosted by members of the Ferns Pastoral Committee and Bishop Denis Brennan was on hand to give plaques and goodie bags to the winners.

However, the prizes didn’t end there as Maria Colfer, Office of the Diocesan Pastoral Council Co- Ordinator, explains: ‘Most of the children did prayers or short stories so we brought them into the Christian Media Trust studio and recorded them reciting their work. These recordings will be going out on SE Radio on May 20 and 27 and June 3 at 8.30 p.m.’

And Maria said that the awards continue to grow in popularity as local children learn about topical issues while engaging with religion and spirituality.

‘It’s one way of getting children to engage with the scriptures, or some aspects of their own religious programme, and it’s practical as well because they’re learning about their own environment and what they can do, and it ties in with things like the Green Schools Flags too,’ she said.
