Revving up for classic car show

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

THE sound of engines will echo around Wexford’s quay-front this weekend as some 500 cars of all make, model and vintage gather to take part in Wexford Sports and Classic Car Club’s annual Spring Challenge.

Run over two days the event will see a wonderful array of impeccably maintained classic cars, vintage cars, sports cars and modified cars take their place on the quay on the Saturday, before they all set off on a Sunday drive taking in the most beautiful scenery that Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Laois have to offer.

The event has been ongoing since 2010 and each year, the Wexford club welcomes drivers in glistening machines from all over Ireland to take part.

‘We’re hopeful that we’ll get somewhere around 500 cars over the two days,’ said organiser Ger Kielthy. ‘ They come from all over the country and we’ll have all kinds of cars taking part. This year the event is going to be a fundraiser for the RNLI, Marinewatch and Wexford Women’s Refuge.’

It’s sure to be one hell of a spectacle as the cars line up once again on the quay-front and, as well as participants in the run, the event is expected to attract a huge crowd of spectators. The cars will be polished and on display on the quay on Saturday from 10 a.m. to

5 p.m. and they’ll set off at 12.30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, taking in

100 miles of challenging roads and breathtaking scenery, stopping off for lunch at Toughers Restaurant in Carlow before finishing at Corcoran’s pub in New Ross that evening.
