Two hat-tricks as Wexford women hit Kilkenny for six

-

Wexford Women’s League 6, Kilkenny and District League 0: Two hat-tricks saw the Wexford Women’s League almost ensure their place in the semi-finals of the FAI Angela Hearst Women’s Inter-League Cup as they bounced back from their opening day defeat in Cork.

There was little doubt regarding who was going to win this game as Wexford started very brightly and had the visitors on the back foot from the kick-off, being rewarded after just five minutes when Marian Cardiff outpaced the defence to slot to the corner of the net.

Continued pressure saw Marian break through to score a similar goal twelve minutes later, and she was unlucky not to make it three when the ’keeper saved well on the half-hour mark.

Kilkenny did find their feet and played some of their better football before half-time but found the well-organised Wexford defence difficult to break down.

The second-half saw Wexford more in control with Marian completing her hat-trick, and she probably should have scored another couple, while Gina Foley found her scoring boots and after a couple of efforts that went close, she scored three in quick succession to wrap up a comfortable 6-0 win.

All in all it was a good win for the squad, with manager Wayne Gregg using the opportunity to give some of his younger players some experience. They now await the round of games played in May to discover who they will be playing in the semi-final.

Thanks to Bunclody AFC who had the pitch in pristine condition for this match.
