SUPER SISTERS!

- BY PÁDRAIG BYRNE

IT’S been heralded as one of the best shows that Enniscorthy has seen in years and one of Enniscorthy Musical Society’s greatest ever productions; ‘Sister Act’ both thrilled and entertained audiences in equal measure as it took over the Coláiste Bríde Complex for a five night run last week.

‘We’ve been absolutely blown away by the reaction,’ said EMS Chairperson James Dobbs. ‘It really has been the best show we’ve had in years. We’ve been playing to full houses almost every night, something which we haven’t seen since “Jesus Christ Superstar” (2006) and there’s been standing ovations every night which is really nice.’

Featuring a wonderful cast of 40 people, the show was the hugely popular stage adaptation of the hit 1992 film of the same name starring Whoopi Goldberg in the lead role. Enniscorthy had it’s own wonderful leading lady in the form of Ashley Doran who was previously the runner up in the AIMS Best Comedienne category. She took to the role effortlessly and won massive plaudits from the audiences each night. The show was directed by Imelda McDonagh and with music and dancing forming such a huge part of the show, there were a lot of hours put in by musical director Kevin Kennedy and choreographer Ann Marie Cooney.

‘A lot of work has gone into it,’ said James. ‘We’ve really been working on it since December. Then there’s been a lot of hours fundraising and organising things, but it’s all really worth it when you get a reception like that.’

The result was a wonderful and colourful interpretation of a modern classic which certainly captured the imagination and hearts of everyone in attendance. With a special place in the local community, this is the musical society’s 46th show and it is sure to go down as one of the best yet.

On behalf of the cast, crew and everyone involved, James wished to thank the people of Enniscorthy for all their support of the production. After five busy nights, the gang will now be looking to take a rest, however, the public are already looking forward to seeing what they’ll have on offer next.
