Trees need to be kept in Bunclody
A member of Wexford County
Council has highlighted the importance or retaining the trees located in the centre of Bunclody village - some of which are 300 years old.
Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy highlighted the issue at this months meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council.
She raised her concerns having about the tree during a general discussion about Bunclody in which she asked if a liaison arrangement could be in place with local residents and business people in relation to ongoing work on the N80.
While acknowledging that the majority of the work is being done under Carlow local authority Cllr Murphy said: ‘I would ask that Wexford County Council highlight the importance of decent traffic management [during the work] because if not it will be detrimental to businesses there.’
Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan agreed and said it’s important that proper ‘community support’ is in place during the works.
Director of Services, John Carley, said he had raised those concerns with Carlow County Council. Cllr Murphy said it was vital that the trees remain in ‘ the mall’ area of the town as they are part of the local heritage.
‘It’s 30 years since the Bunclody residents came together and took some of them out themselves that had to be cut back,’ she said. She referred to recent work that had been done in felling one or two trees that were affectively dead while another had to have its branches cut back.
‘Money will have to be found somewhere because they are unique and we have to keep them there,’ she said.
