Disappointment following housing development move
WEXFORD COUNTY COUNCIL has been informed by Cooperative Housing Ireland, that the developers of the Hunters Hill estate are withdrawing from the agreement made to transfer 36 properties to the approved housing body for social and affordable housing in Gorey.
Discussing this at the Gorey Municipal District April meeting, Cllr Mary Farrell said that this move ‘ leaves a bad taste, and the developer who did this needs to be highlighted’.
The move was described as ‘an unfortunate set back’ by council members, and councillors heard this could delay the placement of those on the housing list by six months, as the housing stock decreases.
Councillors were told that those who were approved for Hunters Hill, would be prioritised now.
‘ This is not a good way to operate, it is acting in very bad faith,’ said Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin.
‘It is certainly disappointing to see any developer do this, as it happened a lot during the Celtic Tiger. However, I have been assured by Wexford County Council that they are doing their very best to ensure that all those who had hoped to be housed in Hunters Hill, Gorey, will be accommodated elsewhere,’ Cllr Ó Súilleabháin added.
‘While the Council is disappointed that the developer has decided to withdraw from this agreement at this advanced stage in the development, we do wish every success to the developer on the completion and sale of these properties,’ Wexford County Council said in a statement.
The properties are being advertised for sale on sites such as daft.ie, ranging in price from €210,000 to €265,000 and an open viewing has been held.
Wexford County Council has recently completed a number of other agreements with other developers for delivery of housing units in the Gorey area this year, and these agreements will offset the impact of the withdrawal of the Hunters Hill project on the delivery of social housing in the area.
