Seminar will reveal secrets to ageing well

- By SIMON BOURKE

THE average life expectancy of an Irish person is now 81 years old. But how do we ensure that those additional years are well spent, that they live up to their title and be our golden years?

A seminar taking place at the Ferrycarrig Hotel on Tuesday May 7 promises to provide answers to those questions, and others like them.

Delivered by Prof Rose Anne Kenny of Trinity College, Dublin, the ‘How to Age Well’ seminar will use evidence obtained from Trinity College’s Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA) to demonstrate how the quality of one’s life can get better as you grow older.

‘We’ll be sharing the secrets of successful ageing,’ said Professor Kenny. ‘We’ll be talking about social engagement, keeping active and volunteering. Ageing starts in childhood so it’s important we’re aware early on of the factors which influence ageing, and what one can do for oneself to ensure that as far as possible you have a prosperous, healthy and happy third period of your life.’

The event is being coordinated by Wexford GAA’s Health & Wellbeing committee, will be supported by Irish Life and is open to all interested members of the public.

Liam Griffin is the local ambassador for the event, and will be in attendance on the night.

Speaking ahead of the event, Liam Griffin said: ‘Social connections are essential to living longer and I am looking forward to finding out more at the seminar about the beneficial influence our social and community connections can have on positive ageing.’

Over 8,500 people aged 50 and older were randomly selected to participate in the TILDA research regarding many aspects of their lives including happiness, physical and mental health, financial circumstances, quality of life, and perceptions of ageing.

To give the organisers an idea of numbers attendees are asked to register for the Wexford event at www.eventbrite.ie

Or you can ring TILDA on 01-8964120 to reserve a place.
