Stage set for memorial cycle race
CYCLISTS are expected to travel from all over to get back in the saddle for the annual Frank O’Rourke Memorial Cycle Race this Sunday, May 5.
The event is run by Wexford Wheelers and has grown massively in popularity in recent years and once again, organisers are anticipating a great turnout as cyclists hit the road in memory of the late, great Frank.
An avid cyclist, Frank, who passed away in 2006, was well known on the Wexford circuit and as a younger man, he participated in a number of Rás Tailteann events.
Passionate about the sport, Frank loved nothing more than to share his experience and knowledge with others, particularly the younger generation of cyclists. He was also instrumental in the revival of the Wexford Wheelers Cycling Club, cycling both competitively and for pleasure.
Apart from his cycling exploits, Frank was also well-known for founding Ferrybank Motors alongside his wife Mary in 1967. The dealership still stands today and is still run by the O’Rourke family, who are delighted and proud to sponsor Wexford Wheelers and the annual race in Frank’s honour.
The event has become a staple of the racing calendar and this year promises to be one of the biggest yet with race categories including A1/A2, A3/Junior and A4. Sign on is from 9.30 a.m. at Camross Hall with the race getting under way at 12 noon.
The race route covers several laps of a 22km circuit starting at Camross, heading towards Adamstown and turning left at Adamstown towards Carrigbyrne.
At Carrigbyrne, the race turns left onto the N25 towards Wexford, returning to the start at Camross. The A1/A2 race is 110 Km, A3/Junior is 110 Km, and A4 is 88 km. For more details, see www.wexfordwheelers.com.
