On Tuesday, April 23, we had our 18-hole Valerie Doyle qualifier, sponsored by Helen d’Eathe and her home shop. A total of 77 ladies took part, and standard scratch was 37.

Results: overall, Pauline Roban (24), 39 points; Category 1 (0-18), Laura Dempsey (7), 35 points (back nine); Category 2 (19-28), Marina Hatton (26), 35 points (back nine); Category 3 (29-36), Audrey Lawrence (35), 28 points; Category 6, Fiona Kidd (37), 27 points.

Congratula­tions to Laura Dempsey, Pauline Rogan and Audrey Lawrence who will represent Enniscorth­y in the Valerie Doyle Classic later this year. Best of luck ladies.

The nine-hole qualifier was won by Bernie Butler (40) with 21 points, and second was Breda Morrison (25) with 16 points.

Tuesday, April 30, we are having our Australian spoons Scotch foursomes competitio­n which is sponsored by Beechdale Garden Centre.

COURTOWNLA­DIES

Tuesday, April 23, ladies’ day, was sponsored by Liam Byrne & Son Car and Machinery Repair.

Liam is one of our new sponsors and was represente­d by Marie Noctor on the night, and we thank them both for their generous sponsorshi­p.

Our ladies played Scotch foursomes which was a qualifier for the Australian spoons. A total of 60 ladies played, and well done to all the prize-winners.

The winners will go on to represent Courtown in the district finals during the summer.

Results: 1, Denise Kavanagh and Marion Siggins (18), 39 points; 2, Sarah Donnellan and Mairéad Sunderland (11), 38 points; 3, Pat Walters and Mary Halford (24), 37 points.

Nine-hole results: 1, Rosemary Ryan (29), 15 points; 2, Mairéad Coffey (38), 14 points.

Well done to our Ladies’ Challenge cup team, managed by Ann Bernie, who had a great victory over Wicklow. Best of luck to all the ladies’ teams which are out this week.

Easter Monday nine-hole competitio­n ( gents) played from back tees (winner to represent club in Killiney GC Leinster 9-hole competitio­n) - 1st: Paul Doolan(16) 21 points; 2nd: Thomas Doolan (14) 20 points; 3rd: Shane Fox (10) 20 points, holding off Greg Gilbert on countback.

Ladies Easter Monday nine-hole - Sinead Johnson (24) 17 points, Tracey Hutton (28) 15 points, Suzanne Hedderman (24) Old Conna 13 points.

COURTOWN

There was an Open Team of Four Scramble held on the Bank Holiday Monday, April 22.

The winning team was Brendan Breen (3), Martin Sheehan (6), Liam Redmond (11) and M. Doyle (13) on a score of 55.7. Second were Mark McKernan (15), Brian McKernan (23), Peter Timmons (16) and James Mahon (23) on 56.08, third were Brian Besanson (17), Dermot Prendergas­t (9), Ian Crimmons (16) and Larry D’Arcy (10) on 56.8 and fourth were Larry O Brien (19), Joe O Brien (15), Walter McNally (17) and Tommy Kinsella (18) on 58.1.

The Open Gent’s Singles competitio­n on Wednesday, April 24, was won by Ciaran Sheridan (2) with 38 points while in second place was Conor Reid (16) with 35 points. The 11 hole competitio­n was won by George Kilbride (21) with 21 points.

Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, were benefit days in the form of an open team of four competitio­n in aid of the Hope Cancer Support Centre.

Winners were Niall Murphy (9), John Fitzgerald (12), Bernard Byrne (13) and Stephen Doyle (15) on 87 points. Runners-up were John Holmes (10), David Whelan (21), Barry Doyle (15) and Shane Mulvey (11) on 82 points and third were Mark Morris (7), Martin Griffiths (12), Stephen Ryan (10) and Padraic Flood (12) on 81 points.

The team representi­ng the club in the first round of the J. B. Carr Inter Club competitio­n had a great win during the week against near neighbours Enniscorth­y and now advance to the county final where they will meet Bunclody Golf Club.

NEWROSS

The course has really taken a leap forward in the past fortnight, with all areas seeing the signs of growth and health as a result of the good weather and work by staff.

Every member has a role to play in maintainin­g this and no good club member is above raking bunkers and repairing pitch marks etc., even if you haven’t been responsibl­e for the damage yourself. Small actions have big results.

On Thursday, May 2, we have an Open Scramble which is sponsored by Cropcare.

The ‘Mens Foursomes’ draw has been made, as advertised previously, with the first round to be completed by May 14.

There was a large entry which is a great sign. The complete draw including those who got a bye into the next round is on the notice board in the men’s locker room.

It is up to all four players to arrange their own matches and contact numbers are available at the bar.

No extension of the closing date and any unplayed matches will be decided by coin toss.

Over the May Bank Holiday week-end we have an open fourball which has been sponsored by the life members over the last number of years.

Life members are again sponsoring this year’s competitio­n and should contact any of the following: Captain Bill Hurley, President Mick Malone, Sean Furlong or Harry Reinhardt.
