BLACKSTAIRS BURNING

The Blackstairs Farming Group are very concerned about the recent spate of burning that have occurred on the Blackstairs mountain. Their concern has been intensified by the recent high profile wildfires in Killarney National Park and last weekend in Donegal.

Such fires result in significant risk to local communities and their properties. Nationally important habitats for protected plants and animals are lost. Hill walking trails become black burnt pathways unfit for purpose and grazing land for hill sheep farmers is lost. The recovery of burnt uplands is a slow process taking many years to return. The fires on Blackstairs have not been as damaging as those in Kerry and Donegal due to the diligence of the hill farming community and local fire brigade.

It is not known what caused the recent fires on Blackstairs, however it is believed they were deliberately set. Martin Shannon chairperson of BFG said ‘that burning of the uplands can have serious implications for farmer incomes due to loss of grazing ground and direct payments and this year is an added and real treat to the viability of farming in the Blackstairs following a difficult winter and the treat from Brexit uncentainty’. Burning is one of the methods used by upland sheep farmers to prevent overgrown heather and scrub reduce the quality of habitat that provides the grazing for their livestock.

In 2017 the BFG signed an agreement not to burn their uplands, they have kept to this agreement and are working to keep their ties with the local fire service, National Parks, Wildlife Services and Coillte to ensure that all future burning is well planned and controlled. A farmer member of the BFG said ‘the people starting the recent deliberate and illegal fires on our mountain must be held liable and prosecuted’.

KILTEALY VILLAGE RENEWAL

There was a large attendance at the official opening of Kiltealy Village Renewal Scheme recently. Ballindaggin Pipe Band began proceedings by leading a parade from the village to the park where they marched around the perimeter of the park followed by excited children.

Due to the inclement weather the opening ceremony took place in the hall. Bishop Denis Brennan blessed the park and spoke warmly of the many improvements which have taken place in the village where he went to school.

Minister Paul Kehoe opened the park and spoke at length of the importance of village renewal. MC on the day Colm Blake welcomed everyone and detailed the huge amount of work which has gone into the many projects undertaken both recently and over the years including major extensions and improvements to the Community Hall, formation of the Duffry Social Club, The Blackstairs Playschool and more recently Out of School Club, The Gym, The park, The Tidy Towns, The Walking Trails and the latest amenity the Wood Hub. Other projects are in the pipeline.

He went on to congratulate the committee and volunteers on getting the projects completed and everyone who donated time and money and supported the fundraiser, all of which goes to make the village a better and more enjoyable place to live and be proud of. He thanked the public representatives and the clergy both past and present who gave their time and expertise to the many projects.

The park is a wonderful amenity with extensive play area, seating, planting and walkways etc. all wheelchair accessible. A Multi-Use Games Area will be completed in the park in the coming months.
