The election hopefuls are back on my doorstep... but can they deliver?

-

SO canvassing for the forthcoming local elections has begun in earnest it seems. My front porch is littered with campaign leaflets that I’ve barely glanced at because for the first time since I was given the vote I have little or no interest.

There’s a poster of one candidate stuck on a pole right outside my house. It’s coming between me and my sleep. Every time I look out the window, she’s staring at me with her beady eye. She is not winning me over I can tell you that much. It’s only fear of being arrested that’s stopping me from climbing up and taking her down.

For the first time ever I am totally apathetic towards the whole thing and that annoys me because people died for that vote and I know I should feel privileged to have it. But I don’t. I just think ‘same old, same old’ when they call to the door and deliver their half baked manifestos and empty promises.

The dog has taken a particular dislike to the Shinners and the Greens! He can sense passive aggression a mile off! One poor divil nearly lost an ankle last week after the dog escaped out the front door. Me, I just feel general disdain for all of them.

Last time round my demands were simple. I wanted a tree on the green that was overshadowing my garden, cut down. They all swore blind if they were elected they’d get the tree cut down. The feckin’ tree is still there, bigger than ever and casting a bloody big shadow over my favourite sunspot.

This time my concerns are a bit more serious than an over-hanging tree. This time I’m more concerned with recent revelations that dead bodies were being left on trolleys in corridors of our local hospital, sometimes for more than a day because there is nowhere else to put them.

There are people dying in transit in the backs of ambulances because we don’t have adequate cardiac care facilities nearby. There are people all over the country waiting years for surgery. The chances are they will be dead before they reach the top of the list. A & E departments are bursting at the seams whilst inadequate staffing levels mean those on the front line try their best to implement damage limitation but fail miserably.

The question we need to be asking these people who doorstep us for our vote is ‘what can they do about it?’ If elected what can they actually do to address these issues. Those that say they are only running for local election, they have no real say in national issues will not get my vote. The one who says they will do everything they can to be heard, Who doesn’t make false promises or feed me bull****, that’s the person who gets my vote. If that person even exists.

And if they can get that tree cut down, even better!

THE DOG HAS TAKEN A PARTICULAR DISLIKE TO SOME OF THE CANVASSERS. ONE POOR DIVIL NEARLY LOST AN ANKLE LAST WEEK
